I
regularly walked down to the Galata Bridge area which seemed to serve
as "Transport-Central" for all people moving about in Istanbul. The
bridge was easy to walk across the waterway known as the "Golden Horn".
The top level of the bridge always had shoulder-to-shoulder fishermen
fishing for the local mackerel and the bottom level of the bridge
featured restaurants and shops. The Galata Bridge area was always filled with people and small shops One day I walked across and kept going up the hill to the Galata Tower, which is a prominant building from anywhere around the water. Looking north to the Galata Bridge and the Galata Tower I took the excusion tour up to the top of the Galata Tower, then came down and proceeded further up the hill to the new portion of Istanbul. In a short walk further, I reached the street called Istiklal Avenue, which was a dense, high-end shopping street which was designated as "pedestrian-only". It was very nice for walking. This was a Sunday afternoon, and there seemed to be many, many people out in this part of the city.
